Ewa Bomba-Warczak PhD | Principal Investigator

Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania

Ewa received her PhD from University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2017 in the laboratory of Dr. Edwin Chapman, and HHMI Investigator, followed by postdoctoral studies under the mentorship of Dr. Jeffrey Savas at Northwestern University. She has received her B.S. in Biological Sciences with honors from University of Illinois at Chicago under mentorship of Drs. Teresa Orenic and Janet Richmond. Ewa received Jerzy Rose Award for most outstanding graduate thesis in Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, NIH F32 Fellowship and NIH MOSAIC K99 Pathway to Independence Fellowship to Promote Diversity. She is also a co-founder of MITOchats, online seminar series featuring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of mitochondria, a Leading Edge Fellow (Class of 2023) and a Keystone Fellow (Class of 2025).

Born and raised on a small farm in Poland, she enjoys travelling, outdoors and nature – especially the beauty of fall and changing seasons. When not in lab, she is most likely spending time with her husband, two children and their dog, or training for another half marathon. Ewa is an avid audible “reader” with nearly 200 titles in her library (mostly thanks to a few years spent in Chicago traffic, but also, she likes to read).

Tristan

Tristan Wrong | Graduate Student

Tristan is PhD Student in the Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Chemical Biology Graduate Group at the University of Pennsylvania. She is interested in leveraging biochemical techniques to elucidate the mechanisms of reproductive health disorders. Tristan completed her B.S. at Wayne State University in 2024. During her undergraduate studies, she was under the mentorship of Dr. Charlie Fehl where she synthesized chemical tools to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of post-translational modifications. Tristan is the first graduate student to join the Bomba-Warczak lab in May 2025.

In her free time, she enjoys taking dance classes, doing makeup, and reading.

Molly Healey | Graduate Student

Molly is a PhD Student in the Neuroscience Graduate Group at the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated from Hamilton College in 2022 with a B.A. in Neuroscience, then joined the Serrano-Pozo lab at MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease where her work focused on understanding the role of reactive astrocytes in Alzheimer’s disease. Molly is the second graduate student to join the lab, in June 2025.

In her free time, she enjoys, reading, knitting, and exploring Philly.

Fenny at Mt Washburn

Yufeng (Fenny) Zhou, PhD | Research Investigator

Yufeng Zhou, or Fenny, is passionate about understanding how the unique atomic structures of proteins enable their essential functions within cells. Previously, she has conducted X-ray crystallography studies to uncover the atomic structures of ion channels and transporters, and employed single-molecule TIRF microscopy to explore the conformational dynamics of these proteins. Now, she is excited to venture into a new research area in the Bomba-Warczak lab, where she looks forward to combining her expertise in protein biochemistry and structural biology to investigate the mitochondrial proteome.

Fenny is the founding member of the lab, joining in Jan 2025.
